DairyKids – your helpful guide to all things dairy.
The DairyKids website, a product of the Consumer Education Project (CEP) of Milk SA, is aimed at primary school teachers and learners. It offers educational material in both Afrikaans and English, structured around easy-to-use teacher guides that contain short CAPS-aligned lesson plans for each grade to help the educator teach learners how dairy forms part of a healthy lifestyle. Additional resources include interactive posters, fact sheets and hand-outs. Everything available on www.dairykids.co.za can also be downloaded from E-Classroom.
  • The Foundation Phase teacher's guide helps teachers to explain where dairy comes from, how products such as cheese, yoghurt, amasi and butter are made, and why dairy is important in a healthy diet.
  • The Intermediate Phase teacher's guide is a helpful guide to understanding the South African food-based dietary guidelines. It gives a comprehensive overview of what foods to eat as part of a healthy diet and explains how much of each type should be included in a meal. The resource material further also includes information on reading food labels and keeping food safe.
As part of its educational programme, the CEP invites you to join the World School Milk Day challenge this September, which runs in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education's National School Nutrition Programme.
This year, the 'Why choose dairy' campaign encourages primary schools to make healthy choices by participating in a fun lesson and art project to show learners how choosing dairy products helps build healthy bodies and a healthy environment.
Learners are challenged to create art pieces using recycled packaging of dairy products such as milk sachets or bottles, yoghurt cups and product wrappers, and great prizes are up for grabs. The CEP is a not-for-profit organisation, funded by the South African dairy sector, to communicate the health and nutritional benefits of dairy to consumers and health professionals.
